Even though we may not like to think about it, death is a fact of life. Beyond our own death, there is the loss of loved ones, little ones and brave ones whose memories touch our hearts deeply. How can we possibly be saved from such a seemingly hopeless conclusion to life? God promises to save us from death by placing our faith in Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross. How can that save us? In God's sight, when we trust in Christ to save us from our sins, we become part of Christ so that we are in the Body of Christ. Just as a man and a woman are no longer two but one when they marry (exchange vows of faith), we are no longer alone but one with Christ by faith in Christ.
Everything that Christ experienced we will experience since we are in Him. We die with Christ when we confess our sins and trust in his forgiveness. We rise with Christ to live a new life with him. Ultimately, we are promised by God to be resurrected with Christ after we die physically.
Salvation from death comes through receiving eternal life from God. Eternal means eternal. We will live forever since God lives in us through faith in Christ. The same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead will raise us as well. That is the promise for us to receive.
An illustration..we can relate to someone, perhaps even a friend or loved one, who has experienced the devastation of cancer. Mortality is the end result unless the cancer can be removed. In the same way, sin (our moral failure) will always lead to death unless it is removed. God's Word tells us plainly that without the sacrifice of blood for sin, it cannot be removed. This "prescription" is provided over and over again in the Old Testament (God's Word before Christ) through the blood sacrifice of animals. Christ was given as the Lamb of God to provide salvation through the shedding of his blood for our sins. By faith in his perfect, once and for all sacrifice on the cross, we are completely washed clean of sin and its natural consequences. |
