4. Is there only one way to heaven?

According to Jesus, the answer is "yes". Many people have difficulty with his answer because they see so many other religions besides Christianity producing good. However, heaven is not the result of our good works, it is the result of Christ's good works. There are two very important underlying facts that support this.

One is simply this-Christ never sinned and was therefore innocent. Consequently, He is the only person who ever lived who was worthy of heaven on the basis of a perfect life. Two, that means that the rest of the human race can never qualify for heaven because none of us is perfect. This predicament would seem to make heaven impossible. Jesus said just as much when he stated that what is impossible for man is possible for God. How does God make the impossible possible? By faith in what Christ has done on our behalf, we are given acceptance. In other words, heaven is opened to those who receive the gift of Christ's forgiveness which removes all imperfection thereby making us fit for heaven.

Heaven cannot be earned by anyone which is the conflict with religions based on human effort. Heaven is a gift therefore works cannot be counted. This clearly taught truth in God's Word is offensive to many because mankind wants to see heaven as a reward for effort but nothing could be more untrue. Heaven is a gift that we will never deserve no matter how "good" we think we may be. The truth is that any imperfection will disqualify a person from heaven. That fact leaves us utterly dependent on the mercy of God. Fortunately for us, God wants to grant mercy to anyone who asks for it. God does not discriminate. He loves every single person the same - perfectly. But, His love is a gift that can only be received by trusting in Christ.

Jesus Christ stated that he was the way, the truth and the life and that no one could come to God except through him. This claim makes sense because Jesus was God and He was the only human being who lived a sinless life as noted above. He gave his life over to death for our sins so that we could be forgiven and set free from all the punishment that was due us. The consequence for any sin is death therefore all of us find ourselves "between a rock and a hard place". The only way out is through Christ.
